Meaford's Survey Reveals Library Trouble Spots Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:21 pm
Meaford's Public Library has some things to work on after a two surveys were conducted last month. Anne Anderson, a member of Meaford Library board says the interlibrary loans program received top marks from the 325 respondants. Anderson says the surveys also show that most of the respondents like the Library's choice - and supply - of popular books. Unfortunately, said Anderson, the library didn't score nearly so well on providing some other services. According to most of those who answered the survey, Meaford Library's computer training facilities received the most thumbs down. Most also felt the Library needs to do much better in providing study space, especially for teens and young adults. The Library board will be using the results of the Needs Assessment surveys during its public advisory meetings and consultations, this fall.
Flood Forecasting System Working Well in Maitland Saturday, July 24, 2010 5:18 pm
Plans to strengthen the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority's flood forecasting system are moving rapidly ahead. Water Resources Engineer Steve Jackson says the new, web-based monitoring system, which allows staff to more quickly access information from rain gauge stations, is working very well. Jackson says the system is heavily used for day-to-day operations, monitoring flood conditions and operating the dam. Jackson says a river level monitor is expected to be installed upstream of Harriston by the end of next month. He adds the sites for new Listowel headwaters rain gauges have been selected and they will likely be installed in September. The initiatives will make it easier for the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to identify flood risk and monitor weather conditions across the region.
High Water Safety Bulletin Extended Saturday, July 24, 2010 10:13 am
The High Water Safety Bulletin is being extended by the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. Officials posted the bulletin yesterday warning people that flooding is happening or could happen in low lying areas. They also warned that creeks and rivers would be flowing fast. Now they are saying water levels will likely remain high for another 24 to 48 hours. Conservation authority staff removed boards from the Gorrie, Bluevale and Brussels dams so that water could flow more freely through the North, Little and Middle branches of the Maitland River. Staff are also working with municipal officials in Minto where the most rain has fallen to watch water levels there.
