Ontario Hog Producers Biggest Sucessful HFT Bidders Monday, July 26, 2010 8:26 am
Ontario farmers have about 45 per cent of the successful bids to date for the Hog Farm Transition Program. That amounts to about 35 per cent of the value of the bids accepted so far and just over 37 per cent of the animals proposed to be taken out of the system. However, the Canadian Pork Council says those numbers could change. The CPC is still allocating residual funds from the program. Those residual funds are the approximately 4 and a half million dollars not yet locked-in with producer bids. That means that's about how much money was okayed for producers who have since decided not to take part in the program. The Pork Council is now working it's way down the list of producers who made bids in the fourth and final tender. As producers become eligible they'll get a letter from the CPC which will include a deadline by which they will have to either confirm they'll accept or decline. The Canadian Pork Council says that process will continue until the residual funds are fully committed.

DFC Contest Points Consumers To 'Real' Ice Cream Monday, July 26, 2010 8:20 am
Dairy Farmers of Canada is using an on-line contest to help Canadians spot the difference between real ice cream and frozen desserts. The contest is at the website www.nicecream.ca. The prize is a 10 thousand dollar family trip to Jasper. DFC points out that 'frozen dessert' products likely contain palm or coconut oils instead of cream. Ice cream, on the other hand, is made from milk and ingredients derived from milk such as cream, skim milk powder and whey powder. The nicecream.ca website will also provide consumers with tips on how to make sure they're buying real ice cream and not the frozen dessert products.
