The Huron County Health Unit is issuing a public warning about the dangers of something called ear candling. Public health inspector Elizabeth Choi says the practice involves burning a wax-coated, cone-shaped ear candle into the ear of someone while they lay on their side. Choi says the candle is supposed to draw impurities out of the ear. She says testing has shown that the practice has no beneficial affects whatsoever. But she says the patient does run the very real risk of either having their ear canal plugged with melted candle wax or even suffering burns to the ear canal from the hot wax that can drip into their ear. The health unit says both Canada and the United States are banning the import of ear candles.
